Gutter cleaning on Cambridge river lots: heavy leaf fall, damp air and moss along the Grand and the Speed

Houses in Cambridge's river valleys get the worst of both gutter problems: full-sized maples over the roof and damp, cool air that keeps a north-facing trough wet long enough for moss and seedlings to take hold. The fix is a clean timed to November, after the leaves are mostly down, and a hard look at where every downspout lets go, because on a floodplain lot roof water against the foundation is the thing you can least afford.

Why do gutters near the Grand and Speed rivers fill faster?

Because the trees are older and the air is damper. The streets laid out before the war in West Galt, old Preston and the village of Blair were planted with Norway and sugar maples that are now at full size, and a mature maple directly over a roof will fill an eavestrough more than once between Thanksgiving and the first snow. Cambridge sits where the Speed meets the Grand, and a good deal of its older housing sits in the valleys that go with that: the streets below the hill in Galt, the Preston flats, the lots that back onto the river through Blair.

Those valley lots are cooler and damper than the plateau subdivisions in Hespeler's east end. A north-facing trough in that air stays wet for days after rain. Wet leaf compost does not blow away, it packs down, and by the second season it is soil. That is why river-lot gutters need looking at more often than the same house would on a dry hilltop street.

When do the leaves come down in Cambridge?

Later than most gutter cleaning gets booked. The maples drop in a two- to three-week window from late October into November, and the City's own loose leaf collection schedule confirms it: for 2026 the City of Cambridge program begins November 2 and is estimated to finish around November 27, with the note that the schedule can shift depending on when the trees drop. If the City does not expect to be vacuuming leaves off your street until November, cleaning the gutters in early October means doing it twice.

The honest schedule on a maple street is a clean in November after the leaves are mostly down, and a second visit in late spring for the maple keys and blossom that pack into downspout elbows in May and June. Where the tree is directly over the roof, guards deserve a serious look. Where it is a neighbour's tree thirty feet off, usually not.

If you rake, the City asks you to wait until the weekend before your area's turn, rake to the edge of the roadway, keep sticks and branches out of the pile, and keep leaves off storm sewer grates, sidewalks and bike lanes. Gutter debris does not go in that pile; it is yard waste and goes in a paper bag.

Moss, lichen and seedlings in a damp gutter

A plant growing out of an eavestrough is a sign the trough has not been empty for at least a year, and it is more than untidy. Moss holds water against the seams and keeps the metal wet, and the sealant at joints and end caps is the first thing to go. Roots from a maple seedling wedge into a corner joint and pry it open. Lichen on the outside of the trough is harmless to the metal but tells you that side of the house never dries, which is the side where the hangers rust and the fascia behind them softens.

Moss is scraped, not flushed; a hose just moves it to the downspout. The trough is cleared to bare metal, the downspout flushed until it runs clear, and any seam the moss was sitting on is checked for weeping. On river lots the eavestrough clean is often as much about what is growing as what has fallen.

Water around the foundation on a floodplain lot

Much of the old Galt core and the low streets along both rivers fall inside the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated area, which covers land in or near rivers, floodplains, wetlands and steep slopes. Cleaning gutters is not development and needs no permit. What the GRCA's permit rules do cover is site grading, placing or removing fill, and building or enlarging structures, so if a wet basement on a river lot leads you toward regrading the yard, digging a soakaway pit or adding a structure, check with the GRCA before you start.

The cheaper step comes first. The City of Cambridge's own advice to residents is to direct downspouts to a rain garden or grass and not onto hard surfaces such as the driveway. On a valley lot with a high water table that matters more than anywhere else in the city, because the ground near the foundation is already damp and any roof water delivered against the wall has nowhere to go but in. Note that since July 1, 2025 Cambridge has billed a stormwater fee on the water bill at a flat residential rate by lot size, and the City offers credits to non-residential properties only, so unlike Kitchener and Waterloo there is no homeowner credit for a rain barrel here. The reason to get the downspouts running clear and discharging well away from the house is the basement, not the bill.

What happens to the debris

Several bags of wet leaves and roof grit come off a Preston or West Galt house in November, and the Region of Waterloo has rules for them. Yard waste is collected every second week, on the opposite week from garbage, from late March until late November or early December, set out by 7 a.m. in paper yard waste bags or an open rigid can under 121 litres with two handles and no lid, never in plastic, with a 23 kg (50 lb) limit per bag or can. The Cambridge Waste Management Centre at 201 Savage Drive takes bagged leaves and yard waste Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with fees possible. Once the seasonal collection ends, anything left goes as garbage against your bag limit, which is one more argument for finishing the fall clean in November.

What this means for your quote

A river-lot house is quoted on what is actually in the trough: height, length of run, how many downspouts, how much compost and moss, and how hard the ladder work is on a sloped valley lot. The contractor we book for Cambridge clears by hand, scrapes moss, flushes every downspout and checks where it discharges, bags the debris to the Region's rules and sends photos. Planning ranges are on the Cambridge gutter cleaning cost page, and you can describe the house and the trees over it to get the November slot booked before the maples drop.
