Downspout Flushing and Clearing in Cambridge

The downspout is where a gutter clean actually succeeds or fails. A trough can be spotless and the water still comes over the edge because the one pipe meant to carry it away is packed solid at the first elbow.

Downspouts block in a predictable place: the top elbow, where the outlet turns toward the wall, and the bottom elbow, where it turns out across the lawn. Maple keys are the worst offender in Cambridge because they are the right size to wedge and the right shape to mat together; a handful of them at the top elbow and a season of grit on top makes a plug that a hose from the ground will not shift.

How a downspout is cleared

  • Flush from the top. The hose goes in at the outlet in the trough and runs. If clear water comes out the bottom quickly, the pipe is fine and the test is done.
  • Rod from the bottom. If it does not, a plumber's rod or a drain auger goes up from the bottom elbow. Most plugs break up this way and wash out.
  • Open the elbow. When the plug is dense, the top or bottom elbow comes off at the screws, the packed material is pulled out by hand, and the elbow goes back on with the screws facing the right way so the next clean is easier. On an old downspout with rusted fasteners this is done carefully and any strap that fails is replaced.
  • Test again. Water in at the top, clear water out at the bottom, every downspout on the house. That is the standard; a gurgle is a fail.

Underground connections

A good share of Cambridge houses, particularly 1960s to 1980s builds in Preston and Hespeler, have downspouts that disappear into a pipe at grade. Some of those run to a soakaway on the lot, some to the storm sewer, and some to nowhere useful because the pipe collapsed or silted years ago. The connection is tested by running the hose and watching whether the water backs up. If it does, you are told, and the practical fix is usually to disconnect that downspout and run it to grass with an extension rather than to dig. What the pipe connects to on your lot is a question for the City's engineering staff; this site does not guess at it.

Where the water lands

The City of Cambridge's advice to residents is to direct downspouts onto a rain garden or grass rather than a driveway or other hard surface. On a cleaning visit that means checking that each downspout has an extension or splash block, that it is still attached, that it points away from the house and not at the neighbour's wall, and that the ground under it has not been washed into a hollow that sends water back toward the foundation. On the river-valley lots in Galt and along the Speed, where the water table is close and the basements are old stone or early block, this is the part of the visit that matters most. Note that Cambridge's stormwater credits are for non-residential properties only, so there is no bill reduction for a homeowner here; the reason to get the discharge right is the basement.

Frozen downspouts

A downspout that was partly blocked in November becomes a column of ice in January and can split along the seam. If you have one that has frozen, leave it; the pipe cannot be cleared safely until it thaws, and the honest booking is the first open week of spring, when the split will be obvious and can be dealt with as a minor repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one corner of my gutter always overflow?

Nine times out of ten because the downspout at that corner is blocked at an elbow, not because the trough is too small. The other common cause is a run that has sagged so water pools away from the outlet. Both show up on a flush test and both are fixable on the visit.

Can you tell if my downspout is connected to the sewer?

You can be told whether the underground pipe takes water and whether it backs up. Where it goes is another matter; older Cambridge connections are not always on record. If the pipe is not taking water, the sensible fix is to redirect that downspout to grass rather than dig to find out.

Should the downspout extension be removed in winter?

Only if it is in the way of snow clearing, and then put back before the spring melt. An extension that stays on all winter and freezes into a solid tube is better than water pouring at the foundation in a March thaw.
