Gutter Guard Installation in Cambridge

Gutter guards are either a very good buy or a waste of money, and the tree over your roof decides which. Under a mature Galt maple they turn three cleans a year into a check. On a treeless Hespeler cul-de-sac they are an expensive way to clean the gutter once.

Guards are fitted to the eavestroughs you have, after they have been cleaned and any minor repairs made, and they are not a product this site pushes on every house. The first part of the conversation is whether you need them, and the second is which kind.

When guards make sense in Cambridge

  • A mature tree directly over the roof. The West Galt and Preston maple streets, the old oaks in parts of Blair, the spruce and pine on larger lots toward Ayr. If the gutter fills more than twice a year, guards will pay for themselves in cleans within a few seasons.
  • A high, hard-to-reach run. A gable end over a sloped lawn or a window well is dangerous to ladder and expensive to clean. Guarding that one run and cleaning the rest conventionally is a sensible middle option.
  • A rental or a property you are not at. Guards reduce the chance that nobody notices a blocked gutter until the ceiling stains.

When they do not

Young street trees, a treeless subdivision, or a neighbour's tree thirty feet away that drops a light dusting in October. In those cases a yearly clean is cheaper for a decade than the guards. You will be told that if it is the case.

Which type

  • Micro-mesh over a metal frame. The best performer against maple keys, needles and shingle grit, and the most expensive. It still wants a brush-off from time to time because pollen and fine debris can film the mesh.
  • Perforated aluminum. A good general-purpose guard for leaf fall; keys and needles can lodge in the holes, so it suits a maple street better than a spruce lot.
  • Screen inserts. The cheap option. They keep whole leaves out and let everything smaller through, and they lift in the wind and under ice. Honest for a light-debris house, not for a heavy one.
  • Foam and brush inserts. Generally not recommended here. They hold moisture, seed, and ice, and they are the products most often removed from Cambridge gutters because they made things worse.

Guards and ice

No guard prevents ice damming; that is an insulation and ventilation problem in the attic. A rigid guard can carry an ice sheet across the trough and let meltwater run off the front edge, which is usually harmless, but it can also hide a trough of ice underneath. Guards are not a reason to skip the attic question if you are getting dams.

What to expect

Installation follows a full clean and repair of the existing trough; a guard over a sagging or leaking gutter is a guard over a problem. A typical house is done in a day. Guards are fastened to the trough and, depending on type, slipped under the first course of shingles without nailing through them, so the roof warranty is not touched. Afterwards the maintenance plan drops to a check and brush-off rather than a clean, and the quote for that is written at the same time so you know what you are committing to.

Frequently asked questions

Will guards mean I never clean my gutters again?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. They turn a clean into a check and a brush-off, and that check still has to happen, usually once a year. Under a heavy maple the difference is still large and still worth it.

Can guards go on old eavestroughs?

If the trough is sound, yes. If it is rusted through, pulling away from the fascia along most of its length, or the wrong slope end to end, guards are money on top of a replacement that is coming anyway. That assessment is made before anything is ordered, and replacement is a different trade.

Can you guard just the one run that always fills?

Yes, and it is often the right call. The front run under the street maple gets guards; the back and sides get cleaned once a year. It costs a fraction of guarding the whole house.
